Los Alamitos High School
Instructor: Evenstarr Long
Advanced Placement Art History is a college-level survey course that provides an intensive study of the history of Western art and Global Traditions. This history course does not require previous knowledge of art history or the practical techniques of the visual arts. Anyone with a curiosity about the subject, an interest in history, and a willingness to do advanced academic work is encouraged to enroll. Throughout the year we will move chronologically, beginning with prehistory and ending with post-modern and contemporary art. Lectures focus on contextual introductions to Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Emphasis is placed on the Western tradition, but significant time is also devoted to global traditions. Group research projects and presentations will introduce students to the art of various cultures beyond the European tradition. This course utilizes strategies of contextual and comparative formal analysis to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam in early May.
